Combs Ford at the Stowmarket Remembrance services

13 November 2018 (by D Plowman (dplowman))

Victoria W in Year 6 has written about the role our school played in the Stowmarket Remembrance Day services.

Last year the Y6 children wrote letters to the Mayor of Stowmarket, Linda Baxter. After reading War Horse, they asked her if something could be done during the Remembrance service to honour the animals that died in WWI. The Mayor thought it was a great idea and wanted to do some work with the school.

The current Y6 planned and created a poem remembering all of the animals that died in The Great War. We held auditions to read the poem at the Remembrance service and I was chosen alongside Ben R and Matilda J. Also, a plaque was created and put onto the gates remembering all the animals that died during the war.

On Sunday 11th, we met the Mayor in Stowmarket town centre and marched behind her in the parade to the Recreation Ground gates. I felt really proud to be able to be involved in something special. When we reached the Rec, Ben and I read our poem to the crowd of people (around 500). I felt a bit nervous when I was up but I was able to be brave and I think we did a great job.

It was great to be part of the community in Stowmarket.

We are so proud of all the Year 6 children, past and present, who contributed to the Remembrance Day activities. Well done to Victoria, Ben and Matilda for the special role they played, as well as Poppy, who also read at the church service in the evening. We did such a fantastic job that the Mayor even gave us a shout-out in the East Anglian Daily Times, which you can read here!
