Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
“Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. All schools should teach PSHE, drawing on good practice. PSHE is a non-statutory subject … however schools should use their PSHE education programme to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.
Schools should seek to use PSHE education to build, where appropriate, on the statutory content … outlined in the national curriculum, the basic school curriculum and in statutory guidance on: drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.”

What are we trying to achieve?
Our PSHE curriculum is part of our ‘Big Idea’ of Personal Growth and enables our children to:
- understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world by exploring relationships:
- families and the people who care for me;
- caring friendships;
- respectful relationships;
- online relationships;
- being safe.
- develop physical health and wellbeing by exploring:
- physical health and fitness;
- healthy eating;
- drugs and alcohol;
- health and prevention;
- internet safety and harms;
- mental wellbeing;
- basic first aid;
- changing adolescent body.

Our PSHE Curriculum Progression of Knowledge and Skills shows how our children develop their knowledge and skills in PSHE during their time with us.
Our PSHE Curriculum Progression of Vocabulary lists the PSHE vocabulary we want our children to focus on in their lessons. Our children will learn many more words than this, but these are the key words that will help them understand PSHE and link the knowledge they have learned to other areas of the curriculum.
How do we organise learning?
To support the implementation of our PSHE curriculum we are guided by Jigsaw PSHE. Jigsaw PSHE supports our teachers to develop their PSHE expertise and plan and deliver engaging lessons. This ensures that our children progress by knowing more, remembering more and being able to do more. You can find out more about how we structure our PSHE teaching in our PSHE Non-Negotiables.
Our PSHE Curriculum Overview shows the units of work our children will experience during their time with us.
PSHE is taught for 1 lesson every week across the school. This is shown in our example timetables.
How well are we achieving our aims?
- Live and verbal marking is used in every lesson so children get immediate feedback.
- Children are encouraged to look back at their learning from the week before to ensure they haven’t missed any feedback.
- Each Jigsaw puzzle piece (lesson) has two associated outcomes: one is skills based and the other is knowledge based. Each child is assessed against these for every lesson. These are tracked and then used to make a final assessment at the end of every term.
